Is it true that therapy glasses can improve vision

Therapy glasses are often used as an option for overcoming various eye problems. But unfortunately, the effectiveness of these glasses in improving vision is still controversial. Using glasses is one way to improve your eyesight. At least, there are two types of therapeutic glasses that are claimed to normalize your eyes, namely pinhole glasses and orthoptic glasses.

Pinhole Glasses

These glasses are designed specifically for people who have nearsightedness and farsightedness. Unlike glasses in general, the lens on pinhole glasses is coated with a dark plastic sheet filled with small holes. These holes allow the beam of light to enter the eye and focus on the retina better to clarify your vision. Pinhole glasses can be used to help diagnose certain eye conditions, such as cataracts and corneal distortion. In addition, these perforated glasses can also be utilized by patients with aniridia, where the iris (the colored part of the eye) does not develop properly or even does not form at all. As a result, the light entering the eye becomes out of control. This results in increased eye sensitivity to light (glare) and reduced visual acuity. By using pinhole glasses, the amount of light entering the eye can be limited and the vision becomes clearer However, the opposite effect can also occur. These glasses may make your vision blurry and blocked. Pinhole glasses are not recommended for use when driving or when operating machinery, because the effect can reduce the brightness of the object. Some manufacturers have campaigned for the use of pinhole glasses. Even so, there are some people who still question the usefulness. They argue that the claim of the efficacy of pinhole glasses has not been proven scientifically. Although it is thought to have a good effect on some people, pinhole glasses are not good for reading, have a negative impact on the visual field, and are uncomfortable to wear. In addition, pinhole glasses are mostly used by ophthalmologists only as a diagnostic tool, not for treatment.

Orthoptic Glasses

These therapy goggles are used by ophthalmologists to help control the coordination and movement of your eyeballs, with the aim of improving vision. Various eye problems that are claimed to be overcome by orthoptic glasses include:
  • Disturbances in the movement of the eyeball, can be caused by disease, injury, nerve disorders, or birth defects that affect the eye muscles or nerves.
  • Vision is out of focus.
  • Amblyopia or lazy eye.
  • Vision problems related to brain injury.
  • Cockeye.
  • Double vision.
  • Binocular vision problems or the inability to use both eyes together.
Some eye doctors recommend orthoptic glasses, but some do not recommend it because the clinical data that supports the benefits of this therapeutic glasses are still lacking. So, before you decide to wear therapeutic glasses, consult with an eye doctor first.
